Dates of censuses in Scotland which contain useful information:
1841 - 6th June 1841
1851 - 30th March 1851
1861 - 7th April 1861
1871 - 2nd April 1871
1881 - 3rd April 1881
1891 - 5th April 1891
1901 - 31st March 1901
1911 - 2nd April 1911 (not yet available to view)
The use of traditional naming patterns gradually fell away during the 19th century. Not everybody followed the pattern anyway but it’s surprising how often you come across it:
If a child died in infancy, his or her name was frequently given to a subsequent child.
It was also quite common to give sons and daughters a middle name denoting the maiden surname of the mother.
